3 Things To Know About Psoriasis
Aug 13, 2019
August is Psoriasis Awareness Month. What is Psoriasis? Normally, people’s skin generates new cells over the course of weeks, but people with psoriasis generate new skin cells in only days.
This condition is potentially related to an issue with the immune system and causes red, scaly skin blemishes that may result in discomfort and itchiness, but rarely cause pain. Here are three things to know about psoriasis.
Symptoms Of Plaque Psoriasis
Over 80% of people with psoriasis get plaques. These appear as red, thick, scaly patches on the skin. Plaque psoriasis can be itchy with stinging and burning sensations.
Is Psoriasis Contagious?
No. Psoriasis is not contagious and you don’t need to sanitize your hands after touching your plaques. If you know somebody who has recently been diagnosed with psoriasis, relax. You’re not going to “catch it”.
How To Treat Psoriasis
There’s no cure for psoriasis. However, it’s very manageable and can be controlled with medication and other therapies. Your specific treatment should be determined by a dermatologist.
There is no one-size-fits-all solution for psoriasis, and a medical professional will be able to set up a plan specific to your skin and health. Some treatment options for psoriasis include:
- Topical medications, including corticosteroids, vitamin D, retinoid, coal tar, and more.
- Oral medications, including methotrexate, cyclosporine, Otezla, and more.
- Phototherapy, which uses light to slow down skin cell growth and lessen the immune system in the skin.
- Biologics. A newer class of medications that treat psoriasis by blocking part of the immune system.
