How To Help Your Child With Eczema
Aug 31, 2021
Eczema is difficult for adults. Imagine what it’s like for kids! It can be hard to deal with health conditions when it comes to children, and eczema is no exception. It’s itchy, uncomfortable, and can even lead to skin infections if left untreated.
Avoiding Eczema Triggers
There are a number of things that can cause eczema flare-ups. Triggers are different from person to person and can change over time. A few triggers for eczema can include:
- Dust, heat, dander, and smoke
- Pollen, pollution, and sunburn
- Dyes, clothing materials, powders, dry skin, and products with perfumes
If your child has eczema, their skin and triggers may be different from other kids who have eczema. It’s important for you to visit a dermatologist to figure out what triggers your child’s eczema and the best approach to avoid flare-ups.
How To Care For Your Child With Eczema
Give them baths with lukewarm water and soap for 5 minutes at minimum, 20 at maximum. Put moisturizer on their skin as soon as possible after the bath to help the skin retain water. Keeping the skin from getting too dry can help avoid agitating your child’s eczema.
When it comes to moisturizers, you want to make sure you’re using products that are free from fragrances, perfumes, and dyes. Some children need to moisturize 2-3 times a day. Ointments such as vaseline or Aquaphor are good for very dry areas. Creams will usually moisturize better than lotions. Work with your dermatologist to determine the best skincare regimen for your child’s condition.
