Sun Safety Tips For Kids And Adults

Minnesota may be brutally cold in the winter, but the weather is gorgeous in the summer. From now until September, we’ll experience hot temperatures and a lot more sunshine.
Kids and adults need to be careful when going outside. The sun may lead to fun days at the lake or pool, but it’s important to protect yourself and your family from harmful ultraviolet rays.
Sunburn can lead to skin problems, including skin cancer and aging of your skin. Always wear clothing that covers your skin but is still lightweight enough to keep you from getting hot.
Accessories such as sunglasses and hats can be easy to forget, but they’re important for sun protection. Get plenty of time in the shade and drink a lot of water to keep from dehydrating.
Use sunscreen whenever you plan on going outside for longer than 15 minutes. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the best sunscreens are broad-spectrum and water-resistant with an SPF rating of 30 or higher.
Sunscreens are available in either physical (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) or chemical (oxybenzone, avobenzone, etc.) options or a combination of both. Physical sunscreen is preferred for those with sensitive skin, children and babies.
Sunscreen (sunblock) should be applied 30 minutes prior to going out in the sun and re-applied at a minimum of every two hours.
