The Difference Between Medical & Cosmetic DermatologyMay 31, 2022
Thinking of making a dermatology appointment for the first time? Great! You’ve come to the right place. Routine skin exams are important for maintaining a healthy life and we’re glad you’re ready to start. But since this is all new to you, we understand it could be confusing initially. Here are the differences between medical and cosmetic dermatology.
What is Medical Dermatology?
We use medical dermatology to describe examinations of acne, rashes, warts, and more severe conditions including skin cancer and melanoma. Common circumstances that require medical dermatology appointments can include:
- Acne & Rosacea
- Skin Cancer treatment
- Mole evaluations and routine skin exams
- Eczema (Dermatitis)
- Actinic Keratosis
- Just to name a few…
Often, dermatology-specific medical conditions can be treated using prescription medications as well as over-the-counter treatments. For more severe diseases such as skin cancer or melanoma, surgery may be required. We do that too!
What is Cosmetic Dermatology?
While medical dermatology focuses on maintaining healthy skin, cosmetic dermatology takes care of aesthetics, treating how you look using non-medical options. Cosmetic dermatology appointments can include:
- BOTOX® Cosmetic (to remove or smooth facial lines and wrinkles)
- Laser Hair Removal
- MiraDry (to fight sweat in your underarm)
- Cosmetic Treatment of Benign Lesions, such as skin tags and seborrheic keratosis
- Laser treatments of brown spots
- Laser treatments of facial veins and surface leg veins
- Just to name a few …
