What to Do About Shingles
Jul 31, 2022
Shingles is a rash from a virus that lives in the nerves and can affect the skin. It often breaks out on the torso, though it can also break out in other places such as the face. If you’ve ever had chickenpox, you already have the shingles virus in your system. It’s generally a condition experienced by people over 50 years old, but there are cases of people getting the shingles at a much younger age.
Shingles Symptoms
Many people experience a tingling or prickling sensation in their skin for several days. That area of their body eventually breaks out in a rash of blisters that can be extremely painful. The pain associated with Shingles could be described as a “shocking” sensation. Shingles can follow a period when a person feels tired or worn down.
Shingles Treatments
For most people, the rash will clear up on its own after a week or two. However, early treatment can clear up the rash quicker and prevent long-term pain. If you develop a shingles rash and visit a dermatologist within 3 days, they’ll be able to help you by prescribing an antiviral medication.
An antiviral prescription will help accelerate the healing process and over-the-counter pain medication, like ibuprofen and acetaminophen, will help alleviate the discomfort. Gradually, the blisters will scab over and heal.
Please Note: If your shingles outbreak is in or near your eye, please go to an emergency room or an eye doctor ASAP. This virus can cause permanent eye damage if it goes untreated.
