How To Prevent And Detect Skin CancerMay 16, 2019
Sun’s out, fun’s out! We’re just about to enter the season of beaches, biking and long days in the sun. Unfortunately, spending more time outside is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, we get more vitamin D, which has a variety of positive health effects. On the other hand, the sun gives off ultraviolet rays, which can create long-term negative effects, including skin cancer.
May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, so we wanted to provide a few tips to help prevent skin cancer and give some advice on how to detect it.
Prevention really comes down to avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun and keeping your skin covered. Tanning may be popular, but there’s really no safe way to do it (that includes tanning beds). Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) should be used every day on all body parts that will be exposed to the sun. Stay in the shade during the middle of the day to avoid the strongest sun rays. Also remember to wear sun protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses.
It is critically important to do personal skin exams. Detecting skin cancer can be done through spot-checking and using mirrors to check hard-to-see locations of your body. Utilize the ABCDE of moles approach.
A = asymmetry
B = border irregularity
C = color (not uniform)
D = diameter (greater than 6mm)
E = evoloving size, shape or color
If you notice moles or other blemishes that you haven’t seen before, or they fall into one of the ABCDE categories, please schedule an appointment with a dermatologist. Get a proper skin examination and have any suspicious lesions checked and biopsied if needed.
